Webinar on Cultivating Joy and Appreciation of Mathematics through Textile Arts

The Panamanian Foundation for the Promotion of Mathematics (FUNDAPROMAT), in collaboration with the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), invites the public to participate in the Math Webinar in English #55, which will take place on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. (Panama time) / 6:00 p.m. (EDT).

This free webinar is open to the general public, welcoming participants of all ages, including both children and adults.

In this session, invited speakers Siddhi Soni, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at Eastern Connecticut State University, and Alyssa Harbin, Professor in the Education Department at the University of Central Florida, will present on the topic “Cultivating Joy and Appreciation of Mathematics through Textile Arts.”

The webinar will explore how mathematical ideas have been embedded for centuries in art, architecture, and everyday practices across cultures worldwide. Despite these longstanding connections, such relationships have often been underrepresented in mathematics education. Grounded in an ethnomodeling perspective, which highlights and values the mathematical contributions of diverse cultures, the session will focus on textile art traditions as a way to illustrate the deep connections between mathematics and the arts. These approaches aim to promote meaningful mathematical understanding while fostering appreciation for creativity and cultural heritage.

Instructions to access the webinar will be sent via email the day before the event to all registered participants. Those interested can register through the following link: https://tinyurl.com/math-english55.
